Watercolour Brushes
Tips for choosing watercolour brushes
- Choose good quality round watercolour brushes which have a good point when wet.
- Paintbrushes may be either sable or taklon
- You will need several different sizes in your round watercolour brushes. I recommend the following sizes: 000, 2,5 and 7. These will be sufficient to get you started
- You may also find a long pointed brush, such as a rigger to add fine detail to your artwork.
- Many artists also use a good quality watercolour mop brush. The mop brush has the advantage of holding a lot of pigment or water. They also come to a fine point when wet which allows for versatility when using just one brush.
- You will also require a flat 1″ brush. This is handy for laying in backgrounds and wetting large areas of paper.
- A small, stiff hog hair brush is handy for scrubbing out pigment.
If you look after your brushes well, they will last you a long time. Wash them after use. I use a gentle brush soap. I like to reshape the point and stand them upright to dry.
